John F. Rosen, M.D. - Professor of Pediatrics, Division Head
An outstanding toxicologist, pediatrician, and clinical investigator, Dr. John F. Rosen has made important contributions to the nation’s public health especially the health of our children. He is a leader in the battle against the nation’s number one environmental childhood disease - lead poisoning.
Dr. Rosen’s scientific research into the toxic effects of lead and his numerous and extensive clinical studies keep him in the vanguard of this area. A frequent advisor to local, state and federal agencies, he chaired the 1985 and 1991 Centers for Disease Control Committee on Preventing Childhood Lead Poisoning which issued national guidelines for pediatricians on the definition, management and prevention of lead poisoning. Widely published in numerous scientific, medical, and public health journals, Dr. Rosen is also a pioneer in the development and use of x-ray fluorescence to measure lead in bone.
Never bound by laboratory or clinic, Dr. Rosen is active in community outreach. He established the innovative Safe House for Lead Poisoning Prevention in 1991. This temporary residential facility offers comprehensive services to families whose homes are being made lead safe.
