Endocrinology

The clinical focus of the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore is the diagnosis, management and treatment of endocrine and metabolic disorders of childhood and adolescence. In addition, the Pediatric Diabetes Center is a state-of-the-art setting for children and adolescents with diabetes mellitus and their families.

The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology cares for infants and children with endocrine disorders and diabetes mellitus, including disorders of:

• Growth: short stature, tall stature, children with intrauterine growth retardation who have not caught up in height
• Puberty: delayed, precocious
• Thyroid disorders
• Disorders of adrenal function such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Addison's disease
• Hypoglycemia
• Diabetes mellitus, Type 1 and Type 2
• Hirsutism, androgen excess, menstrual abnormalities
• Intersex disorders
• Turner syndrome, Prader Willi syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome

In addition to careful and prompt clinical evaluation, we provide a full line of endocrine testing procedures (endocrine function testing, stimulation testing) under the careful supervision of our staff.

Diabetes Care Team: provides in-depth evaluation and counseling for all patients with diabetes mellitus. We provide diabetes education regarding all aspects of diabetes care: skills assessment and teaching, insulin pump training, continuous subcutaneous glucose monitoring. The Diabetes Care Team consists of two experienced and dedicated nurses who are also certified diabetes educators (CDE). In addition our staff pediatric nutritionist and pediatric social worker are integral team members.

Diabetes Support Group: for parents, meets monthly on Saturdays.

Diabetes Day Camp: for more than 10 years we have offered this award-winning camp, open to all children and teenagers with diabetes mellitus. The camp is held annually in August in the Bronx and provides a rich experience in diabetes education, self care programs, skill teaching, nutritional counseling, exercise programs and, last but not least, lots of fun. We are always looking for new campers and counselors in training.
