General Pediatric Surgery
Pediatric Surgical Services at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) is one of the only few full service surgical departments in the region devoted exclusively to children's care. Our multidisciplinary team creates a treatment plan for each child. Our comprehensive, child-oriented, family-centered approach prepares children for hospitalization and surgery and enlists their parents' support through education about the child's condition.
General Pediatric Surgery
Conditions range from the common surgical illnesses of childhood to the most complex maladies. Patients may be sent to us for evaluation, testing, consultation or treatment. In conjunction with the pediatric emergency physicians in the CHAM Emergency Department, we also treat patients with urgent conditions and illnesses or injuries requiring immediate attention.
High Risk Surgery and Critical Care
Our medical and surgical specialists offer surgical care for children with complex illnesses who require pre- and postoperative services, in conjunction with consulting physicians and pediatric intensivists. These patients are usually treated in the Pediatric Critical Care Unit.
Tumor Service
This service works in close collaboration with our Pediatric Hematology and Oncology physicians, and sees patients referred for consultation, biopsy, primary resection, secondary surgery, follow-up care or adjuvant treatment of solid tumors. We are also surgical consultants to national study groups, making the latest advances in surgical oncology available to our patients, and we are an institutional member of the national Children's Oncology Group, with access to the latest and most advanced treatments and trials.
Gastrointestinal Surgery
We offer specialized surgical treatment for acquired or congenital gastrointestinal conditions in conjunction with pediatric gastroenterologists. We can accomplish global evaluations, including upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, in a day hospital setting or a regular hospital admission.
Bariatric Surgery
We have the distinction of being the first in the nation to have offered weight loss surgery on a research basis to a highly selected group of adolescents who had failed weight reduction programs. We collaborate with co-investigators from Adolescent Medicine, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology and Child Psychiatry to provide qualified adolescent patients a minimally invasive operation to block food from entering the stomach (known as the "lap-band"). Our comprehensive, multidisciplinary group follows patients closely after their operation to offer nutritional guidance, medical monitoring and emotional support to patients and their families.
Vascular Lesions
We offer testing, consultation and treatment for children with cutaneous, visceral and extremity lesions of vascular or lymphatic origin.
