The Allergy and Immunology Fellowship Program at Montefiore-Einstein is one of the most established and comprehensive in the country. Under the leadership of Dr. Arye Rubinstein, this program has for many years been a pioneer in the field of immunology. Our division consists of faculty from pediatric as well as adult medicine backgrounds with diverse interests within the subspecialty field.
From the first day of training, our fellows have the opportunity to diagnose and treat patients with a wide array of immune and allergic conditions. Since our hospital is officially a New York state newborn screen referral center, our division evaluates all abnormal T cell screens in the Bronx and proximal regions. Our program is one of the main centers in New York caring for patient with common variable immunodeficiency disorder. Our program also has the distinction of being a part of the 22q11 Deletion Syndrome Regional Center where our team cares for patients with DiGeorge Syndrome.
Additionally, Montefiore has an immunogenetics clinic where patients with rare immune disorders or undiagnosed diseases are evaluated by our Immunology and Genetic Medicine experts. We work closely with other divisions including the Hematology/Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant service, pulmonology, gastroenterology and rheumatology. We follow a very large patient group with rare immune disorders ranging in ages from infancy into adulthood. Examples of such disorders include severe combined immunodeficiency, chronic granulomatous disease, immune polyendorcrinopathy enteropathy X-linked (IPEX), X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome (XLP), autoimmune polyendocrinopathy enteropathy candidiasis ectodermal dysplasia (APECED), DiGeorge Syndrome, STAT1 gain of function, ataxia telangiectasia and common variable immunodeficiency. We also have a large cohort of patients with periodic fever syndromes. Our division also runs its own infusion treatment center at the Morris Park location where we are able to provide our patients with immunoglobulin replacement therapy and a wide array of biological therapies.
We treat the full spectrum of allergic diseases including severe persistent asthma, atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, eosinophilic esophagitis, food and drug allergy. Unique to the Bronx is a large cohort of patients with severe persistent asthma. These patients are seen at the Asthma Center where allergists, pulmonologists, asthma educators and respiratory therapists care for these patients. Throughout their training, fellows become experts with hands on experience in all aspects of immunotherapy, the most up-to-date monoclonal antibody therapies, as well as food challenges and drug desensitization. Our center also participates in a variety of clinical drug trials to treat atopic and immune deficiency disorders.
In addition to a strong clinical curriculum, our fellows also have weekly journal club sessions, board review sessions, and didactic sessions taught by our faculty. All faculty are involved in the different aspects of this academic curriculum ensuring that our trainees are well prepared for their immunology board exams. Every year our fellows present research abstracts at the annual meetings of the American College of Allergy Asthma and Immunology, the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology and the Clinical Immunology Society. Fellows are supported in their research interests and have gone on to publish important findings in well-respected peer-reviewed journals. Our fellows have also been accepted to prestigious programs such as the Clinical Immunology Society’s “Summer School” for young career immunologists. Many of our fellows go on to secure positions in academia in prestigious allergy and immunology centers across the country.
