Education & Training

Introduction

Through a collaboration between the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, the Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship provides comprehensive, collaborative training that allows our fellows to learn the skills necessary to provide the highest level of care for our pediatric patients. Our fellows have the unique opportunity to serve children from the culturally diverse borough of the Bronx, as well as those who travel to CHAM from around the tri-state area, the country and the globe.

This one-year fellowship is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). We offer two positions annually and participate in the NRMP program for both positions.

Clinical Experience

At the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, we handle more than 4,000 surgical cases each year across all subspecialties. During their training, fellows perform pediatric general anesthesia as well as pediatric neurosurgical, thoracic cardiac, orthopedic, urologic, craniofacial and neonatal anesthesia in CHAM operating rooms and offsite locations. Fellows will rotate through our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for one month and will also receive one month of elective time as well as one month of research time.

Educational Experience

The fellowship educational experience centers around a combination of didactics and hands-on teaching. Each Friday morning is protected time for the fellows to participate in journal club, M&M, and guest lectures. We also hold a separate monthly Fellows' College and a cardiac lecture series. This schedule is complemented by interdisciplinary simulation with ENT, PICU and nursing. Fellows also attend annual workshops at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and are encouraged to attend national conferences.

Research Opportunities

The Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship is unique in providing fellows with one full month of research time -- outside of elective time and non-clinical days -- to pursue a variety of research interests. Aided by a research coordinator and research team, fellows have the opportunity to participate in ongoing projects or to start one of their own with guided mentorship. This includes clinical research such as examining the neurologic effects of spinal versus inhaled anesthetics in infants, or non-clinical research such as improving telemedicine in underserved populations. Fellows are encouraged to present their work at national conferences.
