T32 PODIUM Postdoctoral Training Program

The goal of the T32 Purposeful Outreach for Diversity and Inclusion of Underrepresented in Medicine (PODIUM) program is to foster and develop the next generation of researchers in heart, lung, blood and sleep disorders research.

We are seeking postdoctoral research fellow candidates from diverse backgrounds including women and other underrepresented groups in biomedical research who are interested in basic biomedical, clinical or epidemiological research in the areas of cardiovascular, lung and blood diseases (not cancer) and sleep disorders. The scope of research can span from basic biomedical to population health research.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine houses major research programs and datasets in asthma, cardiovascular disease, social determinants of health, and lifecourse epidemiology, among other areas.

This is a 2-year training program supported by the NIH/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (T32 Training Program award: T32HL172255) and presents a unique opportunity for postdoctoral trainees who wish to establish a research career in heart, lung, blood and sleep disorders to receive two years of training and mentorship from some of the top scientists in the country.

This training program provides substantial opportunities for candidates seeking significant research experience, mentorship, and networking, and considerable involvement in authorship of abstracts, presentations, and manuscripts. Fellows will receive training and write a grant proposal during their fellowship. A variety of other professional development activities will be available on campus and at conferences and professional meetings.

Eligibility

• Must have received at the time of appointment: MD (completed residency program), DDS, MD-PhD, PhD or comparable doctoral degree (e.g. ScD, DrPH, PharmD, doctoral degree in nursing).
• Women and individuals from underrepresented groups in biomedical research are highly encouraged to apply.
• Candidates must be a citizen or a noncitizen national of the United States or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence at the time of appointment.
• Candidates who are clinical fellows must have completed their first year of fellowship.
• Candidates willing to make a two-year commitment to research training.

1. Personal statement describing commitment to research specifically in the area of cardiovascular, pulmonary, and hematologic diseases, and sleep disorders, and to pursue a career in academic medicine;
2. Current CV and documentation of any prior research accomplishments;
3. Complete contact information (name, current position, mailing address, telephone number, and email address) and three letters of recommendation from research mentors and clinical preceptors (at least one of the letters must be from a research mentor).

Training Program Details

The training plan will include individualized curriculum based on the trainee prior experience, competencies and skills with structured classwork, seminars and workshops that supplement hands-on research with mentors. Emphasis will be placed on experiential mentored research experiences as well as professional development activities to prepare the trainees for a research career in academic medicine. Trainees will receive or participate in:

• Skills in conducting research through robust research mentorship
• Biomedical Science Leadership Program course participation to prepare for leadership positions in research, teaching, administration, and industry
• Coursework tailored to trainee needs (e.g. CRTP)
• Opportunities to present research (Research Scholars seminar, regional/national meetings)
• Grant writing skills and complete a grant proposal
• Peer writing groups for manuscript preparation
• Funds for training/research supplies and travel expenses to conferences
• Einstein’s CRTP training costs leading to Masters in Clinical Research and childcare costs ($2,500/year)
